The state capital is Sacramento. The Greater Los Angeles Area and the San Francisco Bay Area are the nation’s second and fifth most populous urban regions, with 18.7 million and 8.8 million residents respectively. Los Angeles is a sprawling Southern California city and the center of the nation’s film and television industry. Near its iconic Hollywood sign, studios such as Paramount Pictures, Universal and Warner Brothers offer behind-the-scenes tours. On Hollywood Boulevard, TCL Chinese Theatre displays celebrities’ hand- and footprints, the Walk of Fame honors thousands of luminaries and vendors sell maps to stars’ homes.

Envy is an ugly thing, New York. While your denizens spend their time sniffling and throwing shade in the snow, Angelenos are busy riding waves, tying up their hiking boots and counting their copious blessings. Think about it: in how many megalopolises can you gallop across rugged mountains just nine miles from City Hall? Despite its heaving head count, LA is a city indelibly tied to mighty Mother Nature. Here, dense, vibrant neighborhoods back onto golden beaches, city streets lead up to flower-carpeted hillsides, and huge, deep-blue skies are an IMAX screen for lingering sunsets made to pierce your heart.

Though still sketchy in patches, Downtown (DTLA) continues its upward swing. New condos and hotels are sprouting like mushrooms, joined by buzz-inducing eateries, bars, boutiques and galleries. It’s here that you’ll find the space-age Broad museum and Walt Disney Concert Hall, which povide dramatic counterpoints to the crumbling opulence of Broadway theaters, the Spanish curves of historic Olvera St and the hulking warehouses of the booming Arts District. Across the concrete Los Angeles River lies East LA, the oldest and largest Mexican community outside of Mexico and home to earthy, vibrant Boyle Heights.

Hvar Tourist

Croatia is an Eastern European country with a long coastline on the Adriatic Sea. Encompassing more than a thousand islands, it’s also crossed by the Dinaric Alps. Its inland capital, Zagreb, is distinguished by its medieval Gornji Grad (Upper Town) and diverse museums. The major coastal city Dubrovnik has massive 16th-century walls encircling an Old Town with Gothic and Renaissance buildings. Hvar, a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea, is best known as a summer resort. Highlights of the port town Hvar include its 13th-century walls, a hilltop fortress and a main square anchored by the Renaissance-era Hvar Cathedral. The island also features beaches such as Dubovica and inland lavender fields. Boat excursions serve the nearby Pakleni Islands, which have secluded beaches and coves.

0

3

Long, lean Hvar is vaguely shaped like the profile of a holiday maker reclining on a sun lounger, which is altogether appropriate for the sunniest spot in the country, and its most luxurious beach destination. Hvar Town, the island’s capital, offers swanky hotels, elegant restaurants and a general sense that, if you care about seeing and being seen, this is the place to be. Rubbing shoulders with the posh yachties are hundreds of young partygoers, dancing on tables at the town’s legendary beach bars. The northern coastal towns of Stari Grad and Jelsa are far more subdued and low-key.

9

10

Hvar’s interior hides abandoned ancient hamlets, craggy peaks, vineyards and the lavender fields that the island is famous for. It’s worth exploring on a day trip, as is the southern end of the island, which has some of Hvar’s most beautiful and isolated coves.

11

Stari Grad, on the island’s north coast, is a quieter, more cultured and altogether more sober affair than Hvar Town, its stylish and sybaritic sister. If you’re not after pulsating nightlife and thousands of people crushing each other along the streets in the high season, head here and enjoy Hvar at a more leisurely pace. That said, you can easily see all of the little town’s sights in half a day.

The name Stari Grad means ‘Old Town’, a reference to the fact that it was founded in 384 BC by the ancient Greeks, who knew it as Pharos. The surrounding fields are still divided into parcels of land demarcated in antiquity. The town sits at the end of a deep inlet, with the narrow lanes of the old quarter spreading out on its southern side. The waterfront promenade continues along the northern bank to a small beach.

Hvar has celebrated 140 years of organized tourism, and today it is considered to be one of the 10 most beautiful islands in the world. Whatever you are looking for on your vacation, you may find it here; night life and cultural attractions of cosmopolitan Hvar town, boat excursions to Pakleni Islands, sandy beaches near Jelsa, the ancient town Stari Grad in which past centuries mingle with modern tourist facilities.

Amsterdam Calling

Amsterdam, It’s the capital and most populous municipality of the Netherlands. Its status as the capital is mandated by the Constitution of the Netherlands, although it is not the seat of the government, which is The Hague. Amsterdam has a population of 851,373 within the city proper, 1,351,587 in the urban area, and 2,410,960 in the Amsterdam metropolitan area. The city is located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country but is not its capital, which is Haarlem. The metropolitan area comprises much of the northern part of the Randstad, one of the larger conurbations in Europe, with a population of approximately 8 million.

3

Most people in The Netherlands own a bicycle because it’s a pretty easy way to get around this generally flat country. Even when cars came within the reach of most people, the bicycle remained popular and city planners have made the cars fit around the bikes, not the other way around. But for the visitor unaccustomed to so many bikes it presents a few hazards to being a pedestrian. There’s another reason why people ride bikes a lot in the Netherlands, fuel is expensive and there is a general urging to stop relying on cars in certain areas.

1

Otherwise, getting around the Netherlands should be fairly easy. It’s a small country, so trips are short and public transportation like buses and rail are well maintained and easy to navigate. Lines run frequently and pre-arranged tickets are rarely needed. The entire country is governed by one-fare system to make things simple. In June 2011 they phased out the old strippenkaart, literally a strip of cards you stamped onboard a tram  and replaced them with a credit card-style smart card called the OV-chipkaart. It’s an electronic card with a built-in chip for use on all public transport in Amsterdam including buses, trams and metros. The card can be topped up with credit in euros. You can get unimited travel throughout Amsterdam on its trams, trains and buses for 24 hours from as little as 7 Euros. Or use the card to travel for a week, or a whole season.

2

Like in any major city, rogue locals will try to scam an unsuspecting tourist in Amsterdam. If you remain smart, wary and alert, you should have a trouble-free visit.

Visitors to the Netherlands posting on a popular travel forum say some individuals may pretend to be police officers and question you over drug possession or counterfeit currency.

images

This is preying on a widespread fear in Europe that the central currency, the Euro, is easily forged and put into circulation. There was a flood of fake 100Euro notes in the Netherlands in 2004 and many businesses in smaller towns stopped accepting them – you may still find some reluctance.

Here’re some tips on spotting a fake Euro note:

  • Euro notes are made of 100% cotton material, making them hard, stiff and firm when touched; not flimsy.
  • Hold the note against plain light and look for the whole denomination number on all corners on both sides of the bank note. The number should be perfectly printed. There should be a dark security stripe across the note.
  • The hologram image changes from the value to a window or to a door symbol when turned in the light. The denomination number on the back should also change from purple to a green.
  • You can carry small battery-operated ultra violet lights to check notes. Under the UV light you should see the signature of the president of the European Central Bank and the flag symbols turn green, the star symbols turn orange.

1491594729776

Amsterdam can seem like a wonderland for adult pleasure, depending on what you are into. From the liberal drug policy to the sex for sale in the windows, you can find a party here if you want to. Amsterdam, known for its Red Light District planned to ban foreigners from its (in) famous coffee shops, where you can order dope straight up or cloaked in a milkshake. Just as the new “locals only” laws came into effect there was a change of government. Although technically speaking you need a weed pass to purchase, the government has ordered that the police not enforce the law. Drugs and scantily clad prostitutes can make for an interesting environment. Never take pictures of women posing or doing other activities in the red windows unless you want your camera taken from you. Also don’t focus on drugs at the expense of monitoring your alcohol. Travellers to Amsterdam and other cities in the Netherlands have reported possibly being drugged at hotel bars and nightclubs. Many of these drugs are colourless and odourless, but produce fatigue, nausea and confusion. Do not leave your drink unattended or let a stranger buy you a drink.

4

There is a major scam surrounding accommodation booking which is big in Amsterdam, but you usually get taken before you arrive. It is possible to find short-term rentals and other housing opportunities using sites like Craigslist and Gumtree, but criminals are now posting bogus properties with a cheap price. You can narrow down which accommodations are suspect by simply reading the ad. Often, a scammer will use poor language, pictures that look too good to be true, and web sites with bad designs. These web sites often have very similar URLs to other rental ads. Asking the ad poster to inspect the accommodation or having a friend in the area inspect it will usually be met with a “no” if the ad is indeed a fake. The good thing with scams on the more popular listing sites is that savvy community members will often start forum threads saying which ads are scams or are suspected of being scams.

As the traveler who has once been from home is wiser than he who has never left his own doorstep, so a knowledge of one other culture should sharpen our ability to scrutinize more steadily, to appreciate more lovingly, our own. People wonder why so many writers and bloggers come to live and visit Paris. I’ve visited Paris for more than seven times and the answer seems simple to me, because it’s the best place to pick ideas. Just like Italy, Spain or Iran are the best places to pick saffron. If you want to pick opium poppies you go to Burma or South-East Asia. And if you want to pick novel ideas, you go to Paris.

Arabian Gulf Pearl

Doha, capital of the peninsular Arabian Gulf country Qatar, is a modern city on Doha Bay. Ringing its downtown waterfront are numerous parks and the Corniche Promenade. On a man-made island, the I.M. Pei–designed Museum of Islamic Art houses an extensive collection from across the Muslim world. At Souq Waqif, a traditional market, vendors offer goods like clothing, crafts and spices.

Near Souq Waqif is turreted Doha Fort (Al Koot Fort), built in the 1920s and now containing a small museum. The Mathaf Arab Museum of Modern Art focuses mainly on art of the Arabian Peninsula, with works dating from the 19th century to today. Wooden boats cruise Doha Bay, offering skyscraper and Corniche views. The northern Katara neighborhood has a beach and cultural center. Offshore is the Pearl, a massive artificial island with high-end shops. Nearby, Doha Golf Club has an 18-hole championship course. Twenty kilometers northwest, Barzan Tower is a watchtower completed in the early 1900s.

Doha was founded in the 1820s as an offshoot of Al Bidda. It was officially declared as the country’s capital in 1971, when Qatar gained independence from being a British Protectorate. As the commercial capital of Qatar and one of the emergent financial centres in the Middle East, Doha is considered a world city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. Doha is located on the central-east portion of Qatar, bordered by the Arabian Gulf on its coast. Its elevation is 10 m (33 ft). Doha is highly urbanized. Land reclamation off the coast has added 400 hectares of land and 30 km of coastline. Half of the 22 km² of surface area which Hamad International Airport was constructed on was reclaimed land. The geology of Doha is primarily composed of weathered unconformity on the top of the Eocene period Dammam Formation, forming dolomitic limestone.

Beauty has an Address

OMAN, like the diversity of the environments and terrains in Oman, Omani people’s features differ as well. The desert dwellers’ features are different from those of mountain dwellers, and the features of the urban population are different from those residents of remote villages who depend on agriculture and livestock for their livelihood. In general, Omani features are characterised by a broad smile and the authentic Arabic generosity that is in the Omani blood. This is evident in the Omani hospitality widespread throughout the country, whether be it the aromatic Omani coffee offered to visitors or the laden palm trees that welcome anyone who wishes to taste their fruit.

IMG_5248

Oman’s history tells stories of heroism, courage, wisdom, patriotism, love and devotion to homeland. This brings us closer to understanding the richness of the Omani cultural experience which has contributed to the building of modern Oman. Oman’s strategic location has played a major role in many campaigns and regional conflicts in this region. Oman overlooks the Arabian Sea, the Sea of Oman and the Arabian Gulf. It also controls the Strait of Hormuz, which is one of the most important facilities in the region, linking the Sea of Oman with the Arabian Gulf. The Strait of Hormuz is a gateway to all ships coming from the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea. Al Wattih in Muscat Governorate is one of the first inhabited cities. Modern archaeological discoveries suggest that humans settled in it during the Stone Age, i.e. more than 10,000 years ago. The Babylonians and the Assyrians settled in Oman because they wanted to control the trade route that linked Asia to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Babylonians and the Assyrians settled in Oman because they wanted to control the trade route that linked Asia to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. With the spread of Islam, and Mazin Bin Gadhubah joining Islam as the first person in Oman and his emigration to Medina to meet the Prophet, Peace be upon Him, the first mosque was built in Oman. This is Al Midhmar Mosque that still stands to this day in Wilayt Samail . These events paved the way for the two kings of Oman at that time, Jua’fer and Abd Ibni Al Jalandi, to enter Islam wholeheartedly and with utter conviction after receiving a letter from the Prophet, Peace be upon Him. A Hadith mentions that the Prophet, Peace be upon Him, said “God’s mercy be on the people of Al Ghubaira” (i.e. the people of Oman). “They have believed in me although they had not seen me”. Also stated in the sermon our Master Abu Bakr Al-Sidiq, the caliph of the Prophet, Peace be upon Him, to the people of Oman: “People of Oman you, you have entered Islam voluntarily although the Prophet has not come to your land on foot or on horse. You have not opposed him as other Arabs opposed him, and you have not called for separation or dispersion. May God unite you in benevolence.”

With the election of Ibn Masood, the first imam, in 751 AD, the Imamate era began in Oman and lasted four centuries until 1154. Several attempts were made to restore the rule of the Imamate in Oman in the mid-fifteenth century, but did not succeed. During the period 1498-1507 AD, the Portuguese tried to control Oman. Omani history tells the story of the Omani people who expelled the Portuguese with their struggle and heroism. Nasser bin Murshid was elected Imam in 1624. Because of the coastal location of Oman, the Omani navy occupied a leading position regionally. This sparked the ire of the Portuguese, who did not forget their devastating defeat. Fierce battles erupted between the Portuguese Navy (which had made India its base after the liberation of Oman) and the strong Omani navy. After a fierce battle, the Omani fleet was able to defeat the Portuguese fleet. Because of the coastal location of Oman, the Omani navy occupied a leading position regionally. Oman had been the target of a number of attempts by the Persians to invade its territory, but the steadfastness and heroism of the Omanis were successfully combined to defeat the occupier. The invaders were defeated, underscoring the exploits of Omani heroes in defending their lands. This great victory was achieved at the hands of Imam Ahmed bin Saeed Al Busaidi, who defeated the Persians and was elected imam. With the advent of 1970 came the dawn of a modern renaissance in the Sultanate, with the beginning of the prosperous era of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, may God protect him.

The spectacular emptiness of the Arabian landscape provides with amazing travel experiences and the best planning advice canvas upon which is projected a riot of cultural, natural, intellectual and trading wonders. National Geographic magazine ranked Oman one of the top 100 destination in the world in 2017. It has amazing geographical diversity, plus diversity in the seasons of the climate.
